SEOUL: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak said yesterday South Korea has expressed the hope for Malaysia to play a role in the context of peace in the Korean Peninsula.

He said this was conveyed by South Korean President Park Geun-Hye during a Malaysia-South Korea delegation meeting at the Cheong Wa Dae (Presidential Blue House) here yesterday.

“South Korea welcomed Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean next year and Malaysia’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (for 2015-2016).

“President Park expressed her country’s full support for Malaysia and expressed the hope that Malaysia will play a role in the context of peace and security in the Korean Peninsula, the biggest threat to which is assumed to be the nuclear programme which President Park feels is still engaged in by North Korea,” he told Malaysian journalists on the second day of his official visit to South Korea.

Najib said this was a matter where the world should put pressure on the country concerned to get it to abide by all the pertinent resolutions adopted by the United Nations.

At the meeting, the prime minister said, President Park said she was impressed with the success of Malaysia as a multiracial and multi-religious nation that had established a peaceful environment and implemented moderate and progressive policies acceptable to all quarters.

“Besides, she was also impressed with our policies based on Islamic practices that took into account the interests of all quarters, including women, compared to other Islamic countries,” he said.
