KUCHING: A teenager was among three persons nabbed for drug abuse following a raid by anti-narcotics police at a village along Jalan Matang on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) in Padawan went to Kampung Selang Keruin and raided a hut, which had been used by suspected addicts to carry out their illicit activities.

The raiding party – led by Inspector Jason Baya – came across three men in the hut, who put up a brief struggle with police in an attempt to escape before being overpowered and placed under arrest.

A subsequent search of the hut produced six translucent plastic packets containing about five grams of what is believed to be Syabu, as well as two plastic packets filled with suspected dried cannabis leaves.

The three detainees, aged between 19 and 29, later tested positive for Syabu and are being held at the Siburan police station lockup pending a remand order application in court.

According to a source, all three were unemployed and did not possess any prior criminal record.

They are being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a jail term of up to five years and whipping.

The Padawan NCID called on the public to channel any drug-related information – be it distribution or consumption –by contacting its office at 082-862640 or any police station.
