Asfia now acting Head of State

KUCHING: State Legislative Assembly (DUN) speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar will be the acting Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak from yesterday until Jan 9 next year.

He took his oath-of-office before Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and High Court of Sabah and Sarawak Judge Supang Lian at a ceremony held at Lapau of the DUN building yesterday, said a press statement.

Earlier, Adenan read the appointment letter from Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah before Asfia signed the document.

This is the second time Asfia has been appointed as acting Head of State, with the first appointment on Dec 29, 2011.

Asfia was later given the salute by the guard of honour mounted by 55 officers and men from the 11th Battalion of the General Operations Force (PGA), Batu Kawa led by commanding officer ASP Rozi Yusop.

A ‘doa selamat’ was recited by State Mosque chief imam Ustaz Dato Mohd Jorgi Suhaili.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is currently on leave.

Among those present at the ceremony were Asfia’s wife Datin Amar Fatimah Mohd Iskandar and close family members, Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu, Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan and his wife Puan Sri Julia Mawan, acting state secretary Datu Ose Murang and deputy state secretary Datu Misnu Taha.
