KUCHING: Sarawak is the next preferred destination for investors from China to set up their factories after Peninsular Malaysia.

Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Chengdu representative, office marketing manager Bo Jiang said many investors from China had set up factories in Melaka and Johor and the State would be next.

Yesterday, Bo Jiang led a group of Chinese investors from Szechuan Province to pay a courtesy visit on Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawi at his office in Wisma Sumber Alam here for a fact-finding mission.

“There are already many investors from China in states in Peninsular Malaysia, so we want to make the state (Sarawak) our next destination…furthermore the facilities, incentives and support (from the state government) are among the attractions,” he told reporters.

He described support from the Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) for investment opportunities as positive.

He said they were here to look into investment opportunities in downstream industries related to sea-shell, bio-tech, palm oil, solar power and property development besides the tourism industry.

According to Bo Jiang, yesterday’s visit was not the first by investors from China as they had made several visits to MID to seek business opportunities in the State.

Julaihi said the visit was to find out about business investment and potential in the state’s downstream industries.

“The visit is more a fact-finding mission to discover investment opportunities in the State as they want to bring in investors and relocate,” he said.
