KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching will open its doors to prospective students and their parents from 10am to 4pm daily this weekend to learn more about the courses it is offering.

The Open Day this Saturday and Sunday at the campus in Song Plaza, Jalan Song here will feature career talks, course previews, information on scholarship and financial aid, as well as one-to-one career counselling.

It will also showcase four programmes to be run in the first quarter of next year namely Career Certificate in Book-keeping, Diploma in Accounting (DIA), Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The Career Certificate in Book-keeping is a three-month technical qualification that introduces students to the fundamentals of preparing and recording financial documentation.

This programme is awarded by Open University Malaysia’s (OUM) Institute of Professional Development (IPD) and serves as a bridging course for students intending to pursue CAT or DIA.

“The book-keeping certification is suitable for working adults interested to learn how to read and prepare basic financial statements.

For next January’s intake, we will offer the programme on full-time and part-time basis,” a statement from the college said.

To be eligible for the book-keeping course, candidates must complete Form 3 and preferably also Form 5, in addition to being able to read and write in Bahasa Melayu and English.

“Most importantly, they must have a keen interest in the selected programme.

Those without formal or higher education credentials will also be considered if they have significant and relevant working experience; and can satisfy us that they have the ability to cope with the programme,” the college said.

As the duration of the book-keeping programme would be three months, this year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students would have completed the course after receiving their results next March – meaning that they could enroll for either CAT or DIA in April 2015.

CAT is a nine-paper technician-level qualification designed by ACCA and can be completed with 12 to 18 months of full-time study.

It is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as being equivalent to a diploma.

Upon completion, students would receive exemption from the three papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.

The next CAT intake at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence in April next year.

To be eligible, students must obtain a minimum of five credits in SPM, including English and Mathematics.

The college’s two-and-a-half year DIA would comprise 30 subjects. It is designed to provide an alternative pathway for accounting students.

Unlike CAT that focuses almost exclusively on accounting, the DIA provides a strong foundation in all aspects of business as it also incorporates marketing, management, economics, law, business mathematics and entrepreneurship.

It will commence in April next year.

To be eligible, students must pass SPM/O-Levels/United Examination Certificate (UEC) with a minimum of three credits including Mathematics

The college has established arrangements on providing pathways for DIA graduates to enter Year 2 of undergraduate programmes in International Business, Accounting and Finance, or Business Management at Sunway University and Nottingham University Business School (NUBS).

Those interested to register for ACCA course must complete either STPM with two credits plus five in SPM including English and Mathematics, CAT qualification or a diploma / degree from any MQA-accredited institution.

Kolej Sunway Kuching is the first and only tuition provider in East Malaysia to be awarded the Platinum Approved Learning Partner status by ACCA.

So far, it has nurtured 321 ACCA affiliates, 656 CAT finalists, as well as five CAT World Prize winners and 21 ACCA and CAT Malaysian Prize winners.

For next year’s January and April intakes, those pursuing DIA, Diploma in Computer Studies, CAT and ACCA programmes can apply for scholarships awarded by Yayasan Sarawak or Teraju@Sarawak (for Bumiputeras), Yayasan Pendidikan Teknikal Rakyat Sarawak (for Dayak students) or Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (for non-Bumiputeras).

Those interested in applying for scholarships are advised to visit the college with their results slip as on-the-spot eligibility interviews will be conducted.

Apart from the Open Day, the college will hold its Counselling Week from 8.30am to 9.30pm on Mondays to Fridays, 8.30am to 5pm (Saturday) and 10am to 4pm (Sunday).
