Man in corruption case released on bail, one surety

SIBU: A 63-year-old man who pleaded not guilty to a charge of corruption was yesterday ordered by the Sessions Court here to be released on RM10,000 bail with one surety.

Lee Hock Liang is charged under Section 17(b) Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 of the same Act.

The Section carries an imprisonment term not exceeding 20 years, and a fine not less than five times the sum or value of gratification, where such gratification could be valued or of a pecuniary nature, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The case will be on trial from Jan 13 to16 next year.

Lee is represented by counsel Orlando Chua.

According to the charge, he committed the offence in Kanowit at about 2pm on April 25.

The charge said he gave RM10,000 to a police officer as inducement for not taking action against him for the alleged transfer of 300 logs of timber without valid royalty declaration documents from Sarawak Forestry Department.
