KUCHING: Sunway College Kuching (Sunway) announced yesterday that it will be collaborating with Open University Malaysia (OUM) to offer a Career Certificate in Book-Keeping in January 2015.

This three-month technical qualification introduces students to the fundamentals of preparing and recording financial documentation from originating documents.

The qualification will be conferred by OUM’s Institute of Professional Development (IPD), while classes will be conducted by Sunway, the official provider for the OUM-IPD Career Certificate in Book-Keeping.

Students who enrolled for the programme will be taught to process ledger transactions up to trial balance stage, according to Sunway’s chief executive officer Joseph Lim.

“They will also learn relevant banking procedures associated with book-keeping as well as how to maintain and reconcile petty cash records, how to prepare the journal and relevant control accounts as well as how to identify and correct errors,” Lim said in a press statement.

He added that students will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the different types of business transactions and documentation, ranging from the duality of transactions and double-entry system to the preparation of the trial balance upon completion of the course.

Lim also disclosed that this certificate serves as a bridging course for students intending to pursue the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) or Diploma in Accounting (DIA) programmes at the college.

“As the duration of the course is three months, 2014 SPM students will complete it just after they receive their actual SPM results in March 2015, which makes them eligible to enrol for either CAT or DIA in April 2015.

“This course is also suitable for working adults who are interested to learn how to read and prepare basic financial statements, such as self-employed entrepreneurs or candidates who are interested to work as accounts clerks in small and medium-sized firms,” Lim stated, adding that the course complement the technical skills needed to fulfil the objectives of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Sunway will be offering the course on full-time and part-time basis for the Jan 2015 intake, and candidates must have completed Form 3 and preferable Form 5 to register for the programme.

Additionally, they must be able to read and write in Bahasa Malaysia and English, and have keen interest. Those without formal or higher education will also be considered if they have significant and relevant working experience and can satisfy OUM that they have the ability to cope with the programme of study.
