KOTA KINABALU: The State Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry yesterday clarified that turkeys from approved plants are allowed to be imported into the state.

Dr Yeo Boon Kiat said this, dispelling claims that supermarkets in the city were not selling turkeys as they did not possess the “halal” certificates.

Speaking to workers at Tong Hing and City Grocer at Suria Sabah Mall, it was ascertained that turkeys were still available for purchase, and that the import of the product was not restricted.

Dr Yeo from the Department of Veterinary and Animal Industry, said like previous years turkeys were imported from plants which were approved, hence there was no political or religious issues.

Staff members from Tong Hing informed a reporter from The Borneo Post that there were no problems with their turkeys, adding that there had been no restrictions on the import of turkeys as of late.

Meanwhile, a staff from City Grocer said customers would have to order turkeys, which would then be ordered in bulk.
