Lim: PR must make clear stand on hudud laws, PM candidate

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) must make a clear stand that the opposition pact will not implement hudud laws if it wins the next general election, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

He said the pact must have clear and consistent policies which could gain the confidence of the people.

“We can only succeed if our position is clear, that if Pakatan captures Putrajaya, it will not implement hudud laws.

“That must be clear. Because that is the aspiration of voters who are moderate, not (the aspiration) of voters with extremist leanings,” he said when opening DAP’s annual convention here yesterday.

He said the parties in Pakatan (DAP, PKR and PAS) must also decide as to who would be prime minister (should it win the election).

Meanwhile, PAS’ election director Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli, who was the party’s sole representative at the convention, when approached by reporters, declined to comment on Lim’s call on the hudud matter.

“I do not wish to say anything on this. If you want to know PAS’ stand wait for PAS convention,” he said.

On Lim’s statement regarding the PR’s candidate for prime minister, Hatta said: “This is a fair suggestion, (however) we will look into it”.

PAS and DAP have been at loggerheads over the hudud issue, but their ally PKR has not made a clear stand on it.

They also have not been able to agree on who should be the prime minister (if PR wins the next election).

Earlier, in his speech, Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said DAP must make early preparations for the Sarawak state election, saying PR must do well in it in order to capture Putrajaya. — Bernama
