Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the proposed extension project would include upgrading airport facilities.
“Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is currently carrying out extension work of its aircraft parking apron, including the runway, costing around RM71 million. This project is expected to be completed by Oct 12 next year,” he said at the Miri Taxi Association’s Dinner at Mega Hotel on Saturday.
Lee, also Senadin assemblyman, said once the extension was completed, the parking apron would be able to accommodate eight Boeing aircraft, nine
ATR planes and four Twin-Otter units.
The extension project also included constructing rooftop walkways for domestic passengers and improving the drainage system.
Lee said Miri Airport’s terminal was too small to cater for the growing passenger traffic — more than two million passengers a year now.
This volume, he pointed out, had exceeded the airport’s maximum capacity.
On Miri Taxi Association, Lee — also its advisor — said he was happy that the 20-year-old association was doing well.
“The committees have encountered various problems, but I’m happy to see that you are able to overcome all challenges professionally.
“In an association, co-operation among the committee and ordinary members is important for mutual benefits. An association does not belong to one person. It belongs to all members.”
Lee urged all taxi drivers to continue project a positive image of the resort city as they were the frontline tourism
ambassadors.
“As the first point of contact with tourists, you need to be professional by projecting a positive image, such as being polite and courteous.”
At the event, he presented a grant of RM5,000 from the Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund to the association.
Miri Taxi Association chairman Lias Julaihi was also present.
