23 charged under Sedition Act since 2009

A total of 23 individuals have been prosecuted under the Sedition Act since 2009, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said they were prosecuted on charges of inciting that involved religious, racial and judicial issues as well as the government and Rulers.

“Out of the 23 individuals prosecuted, five were for inciting charges relating to insult of the Rulers,” she said when winding-up on the debate of Supply Bill 2015 during the sitting here yesterday.

She also thanked the government which would conduct a thorough study and review on a suitable amendment following its announcement to retain and strengthen the act. The government, she said, appreciated every support and would take note of every recommendation aimed at strengthening the act.

Meanwhile another Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar told the Dewan Negara that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was not exempted from paying a competitive rate to attract capable talents to helm the airline.

Without disclosing the gross salary of MAS new chief executive officer (CEO) Christoph R. Mueller, Abdul Wahid , who is in charge of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), gave the impression that based on the current situation, a CEO in the country received an annual remuneration of more than RM1 million.

“To attract capable talents, a company can pay remuneration that is in accordance to the responsibilities and status of those (CEOs) in big corporations,” he said. — Bernama
