Slower Christmas decor sales this year

KOTA KINABALU: Festive season decorations retailer, Queenie Yong, has been selling Christmas decorations for 20 years and hopes to continue the business for years to come.

She has faithfully set up her ‘business spot’ at the ground floor of Wisma Merdeka during major festive seasons such as Christmas, Chinese New Year and Lantern festival.

Aside from selling Christmas trees, she also sells lightings, decorations, Christmas costumes, hairbands and many others.

“In this type of business you have to keep striving and not stop because of the stocks you have.

“It is important for me to sell as much stocks as possible or face the problem of keeping them for another one year,” she said.

She added that while most of the products sold were from China, some were manufactured in Peninsular Malaysia.

She also noticed that her stocks were moving slower this year as compared to previous years.

“Sales is a bit low. You don’t see a lot of crowd visiting the shopping complexes,” she said.

Fortunately, her husband has established a similar endeavour at Palm Square, Centre Point.

She then urged Christmas shoppers yet to decorate their Christmas tree to come and visit their branches at Wisma Merdeka and Centre Point.

“We have lovely decorations, lightings and even Christmas trees up to 12 feet tall at affordable prices,” she said.

Meanwhile, The Borneo Post also carried out surveys at several retailers to check if there were shortages in the supply of turkeys for Christmas this year.

A representative from City Grocer in Suria near here, when contacted said that they did not have any turkey supply presently.

“We were selling turkeys last year, but this year, there seems to be a problem getting the supply,” he said.

The ConsFood Likas branch (The Market Place) when contacted shared a bit of good news, stating that they were selling turkeys but customers have to rush to their outlets as their stocks were running out fast.

“We are trying to get fresh stocks but we are not sure when we’ll get the new supplies. Hopefully in time for the festival,” the salesperson said.
