NREB celebrates its 20th anniversary

KUCHING: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) had a double celebration at a leading hotel here on Monday on the occasion of its 20th anniversary and the Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA) 2014.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem graced the ceremony, where he launched NREB’s coffee table book entitled ‘Two Decades of Environmental Stewardship in Sarawak’.

According to NREB controller Peter Sawal, the book recorded some significant milestones and environmental achievements by Sarawak over the past two decades.

“At the same time, NREB had also organised year-round environmental programmes for NREB staff and family members as well as the public,” he said in his speech during the ceremony which was also attended by Assistant Minister of Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh, Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Dr Lee Kim Shin, Ministry of Resource Planning and Environment permanent secretary Datu Sudarsono Osman and Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to winning companies and agencies for their endeavours in environmental stewardship.

Jointly organised by NREB and SCCI in association with other relevant government ministries, agencies and institutions, the biennial CMEA attracted a total of 73 entries from companies and agencies – 30 under the large industries’ category, 32 under medium industry and 11 under small industries and local authority.

Among these year’s winners were Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) in the Government Agencies – Local Authorities category, PJSS Enterprise (Shell) under the Small Industries – Services and
Other Sectors category and gas/petrol station sub-category and ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd under the recycling services subcategory.

On the other hand, winners in the Medium Industries – Services and Other Sectors category were Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club (golf course sub-category), Grand Margherita Hotel (hotel sub category), Sarawak Planted Forest Sdn Bhd (plantation sub-category) and Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd (services – telecommunication, electricity supply, waste disposal and water supply sub-category).

The winner in the Medium Industries – Manufacturing category was F&N Beverages Manufacturing Sdn Bhd.

Hilton Kuching (hotel), Ta Ann Plywood Sdn Bhd – Reforestation Division (plantation), Naim Holdings Berhad (construction) and Sejingkat Power Corporation Sdn Bhd (services – telecommunication, electricity supply, waste disposal, water supply) were winners in the Large Industries –Services and Other Sectors category.

In the Large Industries – Oil and Gas category, Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd emerged victorious while Taiyo Yuden (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd was the winner in the Large Industries – Manufacturing category.

Meanwhile, 15 companies were awarded the Gold Award while nine other companies the Merit Award.
