KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) will undergo transformation to enhance their role in controlling street demonstration and public order, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said yesterday.

The transformation, he said, would involve changing the mindset of FRU officers and members on the need for them to follow international standard in addressing street demonstrations.

“We can no longer act like we did 10 to 15 years ago, like using the truncheon. Now, there’s a need to change our mindset and this is in line with the people’s expectation and aspiration,” he said at the FRU’s 59th anniversary celebration here yesterday.

Despite Malaysia not listed among the 10 most peaceful countries in the world, he said the country was categorised as ‘high in peace ranking’ in the Global Peace Index 2014. — Bernama
