KOTA KINABALU: A local man, believed to be mentally unsound, was arrested by police after he ran amok with a traditional dagger, ‘keris’ near Apiwon Restaurant at Sembulan here on Monday.

It was said that the suspect ran amok in front of the restaurant before being detained by police around 12.30pm.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said police seized the ‘kris’, religious books and a cane from the 42-year-old suspect when the latter tried to flee the scene on seeing the police.

“The items were found in the suspect’s Proton Saga car and he was immediately taken to the police headquarters,” he said yesterday.

Chandra added that the suspect had on Dec 12 allegedly run amok at the Perkasa roundabout.

“We were informed that a man was running amok while waving a knife at passers-by.

However the suspect managed to flee the scene before police arrived, said Chandra.

According to Chandra, the incident on Friday had caused a stir in the state capital especially during the Christmas celebration at Gaya Street.

However with the arrest of the suspect, police believed they had solved the case and public could continue with their daily activities without any fears, said Chandra.
