SIBU: The state forestry department is geared to combat illegal loggers via land and air surveillance.

Its acting director, Wan Shardini Wan Salleh said the department’s enforcement officers were equipped with firearms and had undergone training by the police.

“We will receive an additional fund of RM1.5 million from the government next year for the task (combating illegal loggers), to add to the RM1 million we have already received.

“We will also beef up our surveillance from the air,” he added.

He said this when officiating at a corporate integrity pledge briefing here today, organised by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for 120 participants.

The participants are from the state’s six main logging licencees and their nine contractors, and officers from six government agencies. -Bernama
