A TOTAL of 729 people have been arrested and charged with using fake identity cards (ICs) or those belonging to others since 2010 until November, this year.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said they were charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007) and could be jailed for up to three years or fined up to RM20,000 or both, if convicted.

“The National Registration Department has, from time to time, received complaints on the existence of syndicates selling fake identity cards. However, from the investigations conducted, the claims could not be verified as there were no accurate information received on the syndicates.”

Wan Junaidi said this when replying to a question from Dr Ariffin SM Omar at the Dewan Negara sitting, here, yesterday.

“Based on the arrests made on those possessing fake identity cards, they only informed that they had acquired the fake ICs from a third party, which could not be identified,” he said. — Bernama
