KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) will produce evidence when issuing summonses to vehicle owners such as photos of the vehicles committing offences starting January 1, next year.
Disclosing this here yesterday, Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said motorists should give their full cooperation to the City Hall by showing their parking coupons otherwise they could be fined up to RM500, the maximum amount under the city’s by-law for failing to comply with the newly introduced Coupon Parking System (CPS).
“The new system has started since last October, where we give three months to the motorists to be familiarize themselves with the system. This system is not new as it has been implemented in other states like Penang.
“I do not understand why Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament (MP) Jimmy Wong is making noise about this system when DBKK has given three months of trial period to the motorists. Most cities in Malaysia have implemented a similar system and our rate is reasonable,” said Madingkir when commenting on a statement on Thursday by Jimmy who urged DBKK to restore the old parking rate in the city or risk the ire of the people.
Madingkir stressed as a leader and a law maker, Jimmy should understand that laws should be respected by the people and not encouraging the people to break it.
Jimmy, in a press conference on Wednesday said a number of people came up to him, saying that the new rates were a burden to them.
Furthermore, DBKK wants to increase the compound rate to RM500 for parking offenses.
The MP also urged the public to reject the new system and be ready to protest.
Madingkir said the RM500 was the maximum compound under the DBKK Car Parking By-Laws, and the amount was lower if offenders would paying their summonses within 30 days after issuance.
“We never say the amount of compound has increased to RM500. The RM500 is the maximum amount according to the law.
“We will also ensure the system will be well organized and evidence will be produced,” added Madingkir.
He also said the parking system would allow DBKK to improve the car park services in the city centre where the profit collected could be used to install CCTV and manage the parking system.
