KUALA LUMPUR: The second wave of floods in the east coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang worsened this evening, forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, raising the level of major rivers beyond the danger point, closing several stretches of road and disrupting a number of train services.

The worst-hit state was Kelantan, where 6,693 people had been moved out of their homes from all the 10 districts, and accommodated in 71 relief centres, according to the state flood portal. The water levels of six major rivers in the state breached the danger point and 17 stretches of road in seven districts were closed to traffic, it reported.

In Terengganu, 4,581 people moved out of their homes while Pahang saw the evacuation of at least 800 people. A villager in Hulu Terengganu said the floods in Kampung Kemat were the worst in 62 years.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) reported in a statement yesterday that the floods caused the cancellation of one train service and disrupted seven on the east coast route.

It said the stretch of tracks between Km490 and Km493, between Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas in Kelantan was flooded at 4am. — Bernama
