MIRI: Political secretary to the chief minister, Kijan Toynbee recently paid a special visit to Bario to get updates about the area and to provide residents with the latest information and developments from the government.

According to her, she had planned the visit to coincide with the long school holidays and like many of her regular visits to Bario, this visit was unannounced.

“When my daughter and I arrived in Bario on Dec 8, we were quite surprised to see a good crowd turn up to meet us, especially our women voters.

“They also attended an event organised for them at Bario longhouse on Dec 8 and 9,” she said adding that over 200 Kelabit wanita voters from the surrounding long houses were present.

She disclosed that it was a routine visit to meet up with voters, keep them informed on what is going on and to listen to feedback, remarks or comments.

“Also with us on the trip were two staff from the Ministry Of Social Development office, Miri who delivered a talk on E-Kasih as well as a Bario clinic nurse who gave a talk on health related matters,” she added.

Kijan said during the trip she briefed the people on the many government assistance, benefits and policies available to help them in their daily life and especially in meeting the challenges ahead under current economic and political environments in the state and country.

At the function, she presented a cash donation of RM2,000 to the Mothers and Women Group of the area, to help them cope with some of their basic needs such cooking utensils, curtains and others.

“They also gave me their ‘wish lists’ for financial assistance which I will address separately later and forward to relevant authorities for consideration,” she said.
