KUCHING: The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) has called on the public to report on matters concerning the local authority.

Mayor Datuk James Chan urged the community to utilise all available communication channels, including the social media, to complain and provide feedback so that the council could take immediate action.

Calling for stronger public cooperation, he wanted local residents to be the eyes and ears of the council in its bid to improve the city’s living environment.

Chan encouraged the public to take photos with their smartphones for the council to act. MBKS, he added, would also disseminate information or report complaints to other relevant agencies.

“Anything you feel is under the council’s responsibility – from clogged drains, potholes and uncollected rubbish to cleanliness issue, public safety and business premises blocking public parking spaces – do report them to us.

“How do you want Kuching to be? Let us work together to solve these problems and make Kuching better,” he told a press conference after chairing MBKS’ final full meeting for the year at its headquarters here yesterday.

Chan’s deputy Abang Affandi Abang Annuar and city secretary John Lee Hok Kong were also present.

Chan added that MBKS had divided its enforcement officers into various zones to serve the public better. He said among its main focus for next year would be to repair and upgrade roads and drainage system, apart from improving its service to the community.

Citing a crime prevention WhatsApp group established by residents in Tabuan to enhance communications and monitoring of their residential areas, the mayor asked the public to do the same in their respective areas.

He encouraged the community to establish communication groups on other awareness campaigns or activities, which could be linked with MBKS, towards improving the living condition.

At the meeting earlier, Chan presented certificates and awards to three personnel retiring this month. They are Pairan Paiman of the Engineering Division who retired after 36 years in service; Hajijah Bakong of the Public Health and Licensing Division (26 years) and Fadil Seli of Building and Landscaping (21 years).

Meanwhile, MBKS will organise its Chinese New Year Festive Sale 2015 at Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre from Feb 6 to 18.

Those interested to participate can collect participation forms at MBKS One Stop Service Counter D at the lobby of its headquarters at Jalan Padungan from Jan 5 to 19. The application forms must be submitted to the same counter by 4pm on Jan 19.

“A total of 274 outlets will be available this time around. Of the lots, 185 are open to the public while 89 are allocated to existing tenants in the area,” MBKS said.

The fee for each stall measuring four-by-eight feet is RM100 (for the public) and RM55 for shop owners (existing tenants) slated for two spaces in front of their premises.
