Number of flood victims in east coast increases

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of evacuees in the three east coast states of peninsular Malaysia increased this morning with the highest number in Kelantan, from 8,505 people recorded last night to 15,624 this morning.

In Pahang, the number increased from 1,038 yesterday to 1,586 today and in Terengganu from 7,567 last night to 8,595 this morning.

According to the Kelantan state government portal, flood victims are currently housed in 108 relief centres compared to 90 centres last night. The centres were opened in all nine districts of Kota Baharu, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Gua Musang, Tumpat and Bachok.

The SMK Ayer Lanas relief centre in Jeli was however, closed this morning. In Pasir Mas, the number of victims increased sharply, from 1,628 victims last night to 7,595 this morning and all are now placed in 32 relief centres.

There was a slight increase in the number of flood victims in Kuala Krai which increased to 2,629 victims this morning from 2,372 last night. Victims are now housed in 14 centres compared to 13 centres last night.

In Tanah Merah, the number of victims decreased slightly from 1,458 last night to 1,429 this morning, all victims were placed in 22 centres.

In Machang, the number of victims also decreased from 1,458 to 1,316 and they were placed in 22 centres, while in Kota Baharu, the figure rose from 816 to 1,280 victims this morning, and victims are now placed in nine centres
compared with six centres last night.

In Pasir Puteh, the number of victims increased from 626 last night to 686 victims this morning while in Bachok the number remains at 60. In Tumpat the number increased from 126 to 545 victims this morning.

Meanwhile in Gua Musang, there were 84 victims placed in Kesedar Lebir Land Development Plan office. As at 8 am, the water levels in five rivers dropped but remained at the danger level. Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang recorded a reading of 10.51 meters above the danger level of 9.00 meters. The water level in Sungai Kelantan at Tambatan Raja, Kota Baharu was at 5.34 meters (danger level – 5.00 meter); at Tangga Krai, Kuala Krai 25.94 meters (danger level – 25 metres) and Jambatan Guillemard, Tanah Merah recorded 17.38 meters (danger level – 16.00 meters).

The water level in Sungai Lebir Gua Musang recorded a reading of 35.13 meters (danger level – 35.00 meters) The weather is cloudy with intermittent rain.

In PAHANG, Kuantan Police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said a new relief centre was opened at Pusat Bina Insan Jaya Gading at 11 pm yesterday for 48 people from Kampung Jaya Gading.

“Five other centres are at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pandan (for 883 evacuees from Kampung Pandan 2, Cendering and Lubuk Puyu); Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Fakeh Samad (320 from Taman Tas Jaya); SMK Gudang Rasau (209 from Kampung Gudang Rasau); Seri Damai community hall (91 from Kampung Seri Damai) and SK Kempadang (35 from Kempadang Hardcore Housing Settlement),” he told Bernama.

He also said that a stretch of road at Km16 of Jalan Kuantan-Sungai Lembing was closed to light vehicles.-Bernama
