Sibu remains dengue ‘hotspot’ in state, says Dr Jerip

KUCHING: The dengue situation in the state remains under control, with most divisions showing downward trends in reported cases.

However, Sibu has exhibited the highest incidences of dengue cases.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil revealed that because Sibu was in low lying area, there were many drains that were stagnant – making them the ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

“Throughout the years, Sibu has posted the highest incidences of dengue and this year, it remains on the top spot, followed by the districts of Mukah and Betong.

“Kuching, on the other hand, is catching up. Dengue incidences, however, would normally increase during rainy seasons,” he told the press after handing over 200 units of 1Malaysia water tanks to families under the ‘Jiwa Murni Programme’, at Siburan community hall near here yesterday.

Dr Jerip said Sibu Municipal Council had been doing its best to have water running inside stagnant drains like those in Jalan Oya and Jalan Lanang.
