‘Christmas is not a show of dominance over other faiths’

KUCHING: Christmas has never been meant to draw those of other faiths into Christianity, or to show dominance over other religions.

For Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing, the occasion is simply to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

“There were religions founded before and after Christianity. The celebration of Christmas has not come about because of other religions, but it is because Christians just want to remind themselves of the birth of Jesus Christ.

“In a multi-religious society such as Malaysia, it would be best if all believers were to keep to their own faith instead of criticising that of others as they might not have the correct understanding.

“Christians in Malaysia has been celebrating Christmas for centuries. It is unwise for some groups to make unfound ‘claims’ that might hurt other religious groups with uncalled for statements, as this may cause religious and social tensions, “ he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Masing was responding to the statement of a local chapter of international Islamic group, Hizbut Tahrir, which alleged that the celebration of Christmas every Dec 25 was a ploy by the Christians to attract Muslims into accepting Jesus, as per reported via an online portal.

“However, this kind of statement usually comes from a few religious bigots who need their 15 seconds of fame.

“Multiracial society like ours, really cannot afford to have this type of attitude being highlighted.”

He said since Sarawak was no longer immune to religious malaise from Peninsular Malaysia, he urged Sarawakians to continue sharing the message of peace and love, which remains a common teaching among all religions.

Meanwhile, Anglican Diocese of Kuching Assistant Bishop Aeries Sumping Jingan, when contacted, said the church had come across many unfair accusations or claims on Christianity.

He believed that there was no point in responding to a distorted perception of the faith.

“Such claims usually come from a minority group. I believe that most of our Muslim friends will not succumb to such distorted and baseless views,” said Aeries.
