SIBU: The statewide blitz to close down illegal cyber gambling dens is a ‘mission accomplished’, said State Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Dr Chai Khin Chung yesterday.

He said the police have played their part positively, following the chief minister’s declaration of war against cyber gambling after years of proliferation of illegal outlets throughout the state.

“There is no more active cyber gambling dens throughout Sarawak now,” he told a press conference after the disposal of the seized computers at the police headquarters here.

He noted that dens operating illegal activities have closed for business following the large scale crackdown mounted by police.

“Some of the operators had moved their dens to rural areas to continue their illegal activities, but were continually raided by us,” he said.

“There was indication that the operators would return to the town here, but we can assure the public that we’re watching their movements.”

Chai said some raids had not been fruitful because the cyber operators were also monitoring police movements as the war trailed off into a cat-and-mouse intrigue.

“The operators usually install CCTV cameras at their premises so they flee before police come in,” he explained.

On the seizures from their raids on cyber gambling, Chai said some 900 computers seized in raids throughout the state had been disposed of under court order.

“This is only a small portion of the seizures for disposal. There are a lot more seizures waiting for the court order,” he said.

Yesterday, two trucks-load of seized computers were sent to Seng Ling Road dumping ground.

With Chai at the press conference were Crime Prevention and Community Security Department chief SAC Burhanuddin Abdul Majid, Sibu Police chief ACP Mohd Kamal Kordi and Sibu CID head DSP Yeoh Chun Shyan.
