Two siblings from Negeri Sembilan win in main category of junior chess championship

KOTA KINABALU: Two siblings from Negeri Sembilan, Subramaniam and Nithyalakhmi Sivanasen won the boys and girls categories of the 7th National Junior Chess Championship 2014 at Kota Kinabalu Community Hall yesterday.

Subramanian and Nithyalakhmi pocketed the championship’s main prize of RM600 each and a certificate.

Penang’s player Tan Jun Ying won the second place of the boys category while Awang Syafie Kiflee of Sabah came in third place.

Chua Jia-Tien of Penang won the second place in the girls category and Athiera Fatneem Rosman of Terengganu was in third place.

The winners received their prizes from Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Masiung Banah. The under-14 and under-12 were also contested in both categories.

Loo Hsien Rong Evan of Kuala Lumpur, Abera Albert and Aaron Justine from Sabah won the first, second and third respectively in the under-14 boys category, while Vianna Deinna Daniel and Putri Nur Afiqah Romeo won the top-three respectively in the under-14 girls category.

The top prize in the boys under-12 category was won by Muhd Hafizuddin Zulkifli of Terengganu followed by SunYong Chen of Sabah and Muhd Zarif Aiman Muhd of Terengganu.

In the girls under-12 category, Nik Nur Nadzirah Nik Md Azrihan of Kelantan won the first prize followed by Nurfadzilah Mohd Elmi and Farena Lazim, both from Sabah.

In conjunction with the 7th National Junior Chess Championship 2014, Sabah Chess Association will be organising KK Mayor Cup Chess Open 2014 from on Dec 20 and 21 at Kota Kinabalu Community Hall.
