KUCHING: A special reception is being planned by Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) for Miss Malaysia World 2014 Dewi Liana Seriestha in celebration of her winning the Miss Talent subsidiary title at the recent world pageant finals in London.

DBNA president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik said the homecoming event was to show the community’s pride and appreciation for Dewi’s feat during the London event – where she not only made it to the top 25 among 120 international hopefuls, but also became the first Malaysian to bag a subsidiary title.

“Her winning Miss Talent goes to show that Dewi has a very big potential to go far in her career – be it in singing, acting or modelling. She has made the Bidayuh community, Sarawak and Malaysia proud.

“We pray that she will always succeed and yet, remain grounded. DBNA will continue to render its support to Dewi in any way that we can,” said Ik Pahon.

Dewi Liana, 25, of Kampung Tematu near here, wowed judges and the audience at Excel London ICC Auditorium as well as millions watching the show from around the world with her powerful voice during a live ‘sing-off’ against Miss Scotland Ellie McKeating, who was no less impressive with her rendition of a traditional Gaelic number.

The Sarawakian was adjudged the best among the two through her soulful performance of ‘Don Juan Triumphant’ from renowned musical ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, defeating McKeating and other contestants from around the world.

However, this year’s crown went to Miss South Africa Rolene Strauss, a 22-year-old fourth-year medical student who received the title from last year’s winner, Megan Young of the Philippines.

Miss Hungary Edina Kulscar was named first runner-up, while Miss United States Elizabeth Safrit placed second-runner up.
