Proposed laws against cyber gambling yet to reach Parliament for approval

KUCHING: The proposed new laws aimed at stumping cyber gambling in the country have yet to make it to the Parliament for approval.

According to Deputy Home Minister Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the laws are still being drafted before submission to the Attorney-General (A-G).

“This is why we cannot slap the offenders with hefty fines and heavier punishments. There are three legislations related to cyber gambling that have yet to reach the Parliament and until then, we just have to make do with the current one that we have,” he said during a press conference after officiating at the Parliamentary Agriculture Development Council (MPPP) programme at Santubong Homestay here yesterday.

Wan Junaidi said the existing law on gambling was deemed irrelevant today as it was drafted in the 1960s.

“The current issue is more sophisticated now than the time when the law was passed (in the 1960s),” he said.

According to him, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently traced a total of 172 illegal gambling websites in the country.
