KOTA KINABALU: Social media practitioners are urged to assist the government in disseminating information that can contribute to the development and progress of the state and the country.

Sabah Umno Puteri chief Normala Rasick, in making the call, pointed out that social media could no longer be looked at as only a platform to express one’s feelings, criticise, spread falsehood and disseminate negative news.

“Therefore we urge social media practitioners to be more responsible in disseminating news so that what they disseminate can and will be beneficial to all,” she said during a media get-together yesterday.

According to Normala, social media practitioners can help the government to garner the people’s support and smoothen the implementation of government’s short and long-term projects for the benefit of the people.

She also said that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government under the leadership Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the federal level and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman at the state level recognises the role of social media practitioners.

She added that nowadays, social media was being used by the younger generation to obtain and disseminate information.

In view of that, Sabah Umno Puteri has organised a Social Media and IT course for its members so that they will be more competitive in the world of social media.

This will make them more skillful and prepared to be cyber troopers, who will be able to refute negative and false news spread via the social media.

Speaking to reporters later, Normala disclosed that Sabah Umno Puteri has about 53,000 members and efforts are being made to increase the movement’s membership.
