Mountain guides urged to observe taboos, be disciplined

RANAU: Mount Kinabalu mountain guides must observe the taboos and be disciplined for their own safety and that of the mountain climbers.

Doina Soibi,50, one of the mountain guides on Mount Kinabalu, said she decided to make mountain guide as a career as the job required physical and mental endurance.

“I was a porter on Mount Kinabalu before deciding to become a mountain  guide eight years ago,” she told Bernama recently.

Doina, who hails from Kundasang, was awarded the best Female Mountain Guide on Dec 3 in conjunction with Taman Kinabalu Community Day.

Taman Kinabalu Community Day is celebrated bienially by the Mount Kinabalu community in collaboration with Sabah Parks.

Meanwhile, Safrey Sumping, 31, who was awarded the Best Male Mountain Guide said the career enabled him to communicate with foreign tourists.

The mountain guide, who also hails from Kundasang, said by communicating with foreign tourists, he could improve his commmand of English. — Bernama
