Teku submits nine proposals to council

SIBU: Turning Teku Road into a dual carriageway, setting up Teku Centenary Park and a Sunday market in Teku Bazaar are three of the nine proposals submitted to the Sibu Municipal Council for consideration and action on Saturday evening.

These were necessitated due to the ever increasing population of over 30,000 and several longhouses in Teku area.

The list of proposals was submitted to the head of the SMC’s Teku Resident Committee, Councillor So Teck Kee by president of the Teku 100th Centenary Celebration, Ling Chong Kiong, at the meet-the people session organised by SMC.

The other proposals were constructing a new 13-km road linking Teku Pasai to Kemuyang and Sibu airport; upgrading a critical 1-km part of the Teku road for safety; and construction of a concrete drainage system in front of the 1Malaysia Clinic Teku.

Others were improvement of Kiang Hin Chung Road, Thien King Siew Ting Road, Pasai Road, Dung Ling Road and other feeder roads, improvement of Teku Road, Rantau Panjang Road, Pasai Road, Kampung Bahagia Jaya Road, Quarry Road and other feeder roads; and drainage system improvement of Kpg Bahagia Jaya area and road infrastructure.

Meanwhile, more than 40 issues were raised by Teku residents during the meet-the-people session.

These included the timing adjustment of traffic light at the junction of Disa Road and Teng Chin Hua Road; upgrading Sg Merah market to two storeys; frequent flooding at Kpg Bahagia Jaya, irregular clearing of drainage and grass-cutting service.

Residents also called for a public swimming pool to be located in Teku as the existing two public swimming pools (Delta and Bukit Lima) were insufficient to cope with the rising population.

Some residents gave the thumbs-up to the session as they could refer any arising issue or plight to the authority concerned for a solution.

They hoped for meetings to be held at least once in six months.

So replied that this has to be taken into consideration, in view of the limitations of merely 30 councillors under the jurisdiction of SMC who were delegated to different zones.

He also told the residents present that their issues raised would be known in two months’ time.

“For any arising issue, we will act on it soonest possible but some issues which involve other government departments and agencies like water board and Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) may need time to address.

“We will also inform you if the issue is addressed or in the process of being solved or that which needs time to tackle,” So added.
