KUCHING: The artificial football turf at Padang C near to the new outdoor stadium in Petra Jaya has been officially completed.

The turf was made possible by the collaboration between Youth and Sports Ministry and the Public Works Department (JKR) here.

The ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Jamil Salleh said the other turf planned for Sarawak is located in Bintulu.

“The federal government, in its Budget 2012, had allocations for the construction of artificial football turfs in 30 locations throughout the country. The facility was in line with the new transformation brought by the federal government to provide high quality sports facilities that meet international football standards.

“With the completion of the artificial football field, we hope that it will benefit the football sport at various levels,” Jamil said during the handover ceremony at Stadium Perpaduan yesterday.

At the receiving end was the Sarawak Stadium Corporation, represented by its general manager Abang Zainuddin Abang Abdul Rahman.

The facility was built at a cost of RM2.348 million and completed on July 15 this year.

Jamil commended JKR Sarawak for completing the project within the timeframe of six months and within the necessary specifications.

Among the advantages of the new field would be all-weather usage, greater durability and lower maintenance costs.

Also present at the handover ceremony were Youth and Sports Ministry deputy secretary-general Dato Azhar Mohd Isa, Youth and Sports Ministry section secretary Ahmad Hassanuddin Afendy Ridzuan, JKR Sarawak representative Iswandi Ahmad Ziadin and Social Development Ministry permanent secretary’s representative Charlie Keling.
