KUALA LUMPUR: The claim spread via WhatsApp that Kelantan will be flooded because of the release of water from a dam in Sukhirin district, Narathiwat, Thailand, is untrue.

National Security Council (MKN) secretary Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen Abdul Wahab said a check with the Royal Irrigation Department of Thailand also found that the dam does not exist.

“Residents are reminded not to believe such a claim and there is no need to panic,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Thailand confirmed that the dam closest to Malaysia is located in Munok district in southern Thailand, but the dam is closed at present. Thajudeen said if water is released from the dam, it will first cause flooding in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat, Thailand.

“We have an understanding with the Thai authorities. If they need to release water in the dam, they will inform us so that we are not surprised by the sudden arrival of water.

“When notified, the MKN will immediately identify waterways and relocate the residents in the areas to reduce the risk of accidents.” He said the floods in Kelantan has nothing to do with the release of water in Thailand but because of heavy rainfall of 400 millilitres daily. — Bernama
