PUTRAJAYA: The proposed delineation exercise of Parliamentary and State constituencies that was scheduled to be gazetted this month has been postponed to next year due to the current floods in several states.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the notice could not be gazetted this month as voters in the flood afflicted areas would have problems checking the notice displayed at EC offices nationwide.

“Several places are flooded. Gazetting the delineation notice at this moment would result in EC being accused of not being fair to voters who are flood victims.

“So EC has to choose a suitable date to gazette the notice. However, a media statement on the matter would be released at the appropriate time,” he said when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

A Bernama report last month said that the EC was expected to gazette the delineation exercise notice for Parliamentary and State constituencies by the end of the year.

The final report on proposals for all constituencies would be submitted to the Prime Minister in less than two years from the date of the notice announcement for it to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat according to Section 8, Schedule 13th of the Federal Constitution.

The report approved by Dewan Rakyat would be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agung for his approval before being gazetted for application. — Bernama
