KOTA KINABALU: The RM224 million Nuclear and Radiotherapy Medical Centre in the Likas Women and Children Hospital is the first one-stop medical centre of its kind to serve patients in Sabah, North Sarawak and Labuan.

The centre, located about eight kilometres from the city, had received more than 5,200 cancer cases since it began operations in April this year.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the effort of the government in building this facility would give a major impact to the people especially on improving the quality of life and accessibility to health services.

“Previously, such facility was only available at the Sabah Medical Centre (SMC), a private hospital and patients used to be sent to the Peninsula and Kuala Lumpur as well as Sarawak for treatment which caused patients and their families great inconvenience,” he told reporters after opening the building in Likas near here yesterday.

Musa said the state government welcomed the commitment of the federal government in fulfilling the needs of Sabahans with specialist doctors and modern medical facilities.

There are about 100 cancer specialists throughout the country including four cancer and oncology experts in Sabah.

The cancer centre has 155 beds with facilities such as radiotherapy and oncology department, nuclear medicine unit, specialist outpatient clinic, wards, operation rooms and so on. — Bernama
