Operators urged to prevent fuel spills in stations

KOTA KINABALU: Fuel stations are encouraged to take preventative steps to minimise the possibility of a fuel spill.

Petronas Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) executive, Rashvir Singh said fuel spill was preventable as long as maintenance and inspection of equipment in the stations were done regularly.

He said fuel spill was one of the incidents that needed to be avoided by fuel stations to ensure  the safety of workers and the public, while at the same time to avoid polluting the environment.

“Cooperation from members of the public is another thing that we need to encourage. By simply asking the operators of fuel stations as to what would happen if there was something leaking into public drains or soil will raise awareness on the importance of safety in the stations.

“Those who are handling the maintenance and inspection of equipment need to wear proper outfits, but in case they fail to do so, the public need to remind them,” he said.

Rashvir was the safety speaker at the Petroleum Safety Awareness Campaign organised by Sabah Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism at a Petronas station at Tebobon, yesterday.

Petronas business partners, dealers and customers attended the  half-day event, which encourages safety in the workplace and fuel stations.
