KOTA BAHARU: There are no words to describe the difficulty faced by flood victims, even more so for those who face health and physical challenges.

For a man suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the last 10 years, Mail@Ismail Yusof, 67, can only pray that the flood situation around his house in Kampung Wakaf Stan in Kubang Kerian can quickly recede.

His wife Kasmat Abdullah, 57, is worried because her husband cannot be soaked in water as it could cause more health related problems for him.

“We are worried about where to shift to if the weather remains like this,” she told Bernama at her house, here.

Kasmat said it had been more than a week since her house was surrounded with water, and her husband’s condition had made things more complicated for her family, not knowing where to go if they had to shift.

Kasmat said the flood situation at her village was among the worst since eight years ago.

Ismail, who faced difficulty speaking looked gloomy when asked about the flood situation as he was worried that his health would deteriorate if the flood did not subside.

An observation by Bernama found that the water level had reached the floor of their house, and outside, it was still at waist level of an adult.

Meanwhile, Nur Fauziah Yusof, 48, who according to her mother had been disabled since birth and was unable to speak, had to shift with her mother to a another sibling’s house nearby where the water level had not reached the home’s floor yet.

Che Minah Daud, 64, said that if the rain continued, they did not know where else to shift to, considering her eldest child’s condition.

Those living in the 13 Avenue Garden housing estate in Kubang Kerian, the worst hit area by the floods, hoped that the Kota Baharu Municipal Council – Islamic City (MPKB-BRI) could quickly complete the building of a drain which had been stalled for the past two years.

Housing area representative Rusli Salleh, 45, said he hoped MPKB-BRI could solve the their problem as soon as possible by funneling the stagnant water into a bigger drain immediately, as it had affected almost 100 residents there. — Bernama
