MIRI: The plan to open a Highland Agriculture Centre in Baram will not only transform the rural areas but would also help minimise rural-urban migration.

Telang Usan Assemblyman Dennis Ngau said the initiative to change the rural landscape of Baram to one of modern living should be supported by all in Baram.

“The government has introduced a number of initiatives, including opening modern agriculture and providing numerous assistance, for the benefit of the people. The latest is the announcement to open a Highland Agriculture Centre between Long Banga and Long Peluan in Ulu Baram.

“Creating opportunities and making life in the rural longhouses more comfortable formed part of the government’s short and long term planning. This is to minimise or, if possible, stop rural-urban migration,” he said at the Sarawak Kenyah Lepo Community Association’s inaugural dinner here on Sunday.

Dennis urged the people to keep an open mind about all these high impact development projects.

“It is important for the people to embrace change and support all government projects. Otherwise, our homes will remain as they are in the future. Do not close the door of opportunity just because you are not sure.”

On the dinner, he said it served as a great opportunity for the community to gel their ties.

He advised the association to work with associations from other communities in order to stay relevant.

Dennis later announced a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant of RM7,000 for the association for its activities.
