Tawau school bus fare to go up by 15% next year

TAWAU: The School bus fares will be increased by 15 per cent which takes effect from Jan 5 next year.

Disclosing this yesterday, Sri Tanjong School Bus Operator Association president Chang Nyk Fah said they had decided to revise the school bus fare, with a 15 per cent increase from the existing fare.

Chang said the association had yet to increase the school bus fare until today since the government’s notification of the school bus fare system.

He said a dialogue session had been held between the respective associations such as Persatuan Pengusaha Bumiputra Bus Sekolah and Persatuan Kebajikan Bus Sekolah and Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board and Road Transport Department at a hotel here on November 21, this year.

But no conclusion had been made about increasing the school bus fare, he added.

“Therefore, our association has decided in one voice to increase the school bus fare by 15 per cent, with effect from January 5, 2015.

This means an increase of 15 sen for one ringgit.

“The school bus fare will be collected for ten months only (from January to October) and 10 per cent will be charged for each month, payable in November.

“This method seems to ease the burden of parents as well as resolve the difficulty of collecting fares by school bus operators at the end of each year,” Chang explained.

He said additional charge would be imposed on students attending extra tuition classes in school unless their parents chose to send and take their children home.

He hoped the parents could understand the rationale of increasing the fare.
