Air travel still considered safe – Masidi

KOTA KINABALU: Despite a flurry of air disasters spooking the airline industry last year, many avid travelers are still looking forward to travel around the world.

Two Malaysia Airlines flights were lost and crashed last year on March and July followed by another AirAsia flight crash at the end of 2014.

Netizens have been sharing their concern about air safety on social media, where most nervous flyers swore not to step on a plane for a long time, but avid travelers still think that traveling by plane is safe.

With the positive response from such people, the tourism industry would not be affected.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said it was a normal reaction after a tragic plane crash that killed passengers.

“I believe, however, that the psychological fear would be temporary in nature going by similar past events.

“Eventually people are going to realise that there are events in their life which are beyond their control. Some people call it ‘fate’,” he said.

In the world today where time is the essence of our daily life, Masidi added people have little choice but to continue to travel by air.

Tourists too will continue to travel by air.

“Air disasters would not have any significant effect on the tourism industry for the simple reason that these incidents are isolated cases.

“Overall it is still safe to travel by plane,” he concluded.
