KUALA LUMPUR:  Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who has been making visits to flood-affected areas in the country has been diagnosed with E.coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria, according to a tweet by the Prime Minister’s Office, yesterday.

In the message, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said doctors who treated the prime minister have advised him to rest.

“The prime minister will resume his duties soon,” said the PMO.

Meanwhile, Najib via his official Twitter account @NajibRazak said he would continue to monitor the flood situation from his residence.

E.coli can result in diarrhea, vomiting, fever and dehydration while severe dehydration, especially among children, can result in death.

Najib had recently visited flood victims in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak.

The situation in flood-hit Perak, Kelantan, Pahang and Johor continued to improve yesterday, with the number of evacuees dropping to 40,852 this afternoon compared to 41,421 in the morning.

In Perak, the number of evacuees decreased slightly to 5,673 from 5,728 recorded yesterday morning.

A National Security Council (NSC) spokesman said one relief centre was closed, leaving 37 centres open in five affected areas.

Perak Tengah still recorded the highest number of victims with 4,521 people, followed by Hulu Perak (606); Hilir Perak (300); Manjung (150) and Kuala Kangsar (96).

In Kelantan, the number of victims sheltered at 41 centres in four districts came down to 5,612 yesterday afternoon compared to 6,126 in the morning.

A state Social Welfare Department spokesman said the number of victims recorded in Kuala Krai was 2,522 people; Gua Musang, 2,076); Tanah Merah, 810 and Machang, 204.

In Pahang, the number of victims in 126 relief centres in seven affected districts remained at 29,547.

A flood operations room spokesman at the Pahang police headquarters said Pekan had the largest number of evacuees with 11,153 people, followed by Temerloh (10,576), Maran (2,771), Bera (2,352), Jerantut (1,534), Kuantan (1,130) and Lipis (31).

The situation remained the same in Johor with 20 victims from five families still remaining at the Kampung Batu Badak community hall in Segamat. — Bernama
