KUALA LUMPUR: A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement staff was sentenced to a total of six months’ imprisonment and RM10,000 fine by the Sessions Court here yesterday for two charges of cheating a trader.

P.Sugumaran, 44, was found guilty of leading M.Sathivelu to believe that he could obtain him approval for six night bazaar lots at Lorong Tunku Abdul Rahman Masjid India, thus inducing the victim to hand him RM600 and RM1,200.

The amounts were channeled to his account at AmBank(M) Berhad, Pudu branch in two transactions at 11.34 am on May 7, 2008 and 1.42 am on May 29, 2008.

Judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain said Sugumaran failed to cast any reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case and that his defence was merely a denial.

Sugumaran received six months’ jail and RM5,000 fine or another three months’ jail on each of the charge.

The court ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently, effective today.

Nevertheless, the court granted counsel S.Ramesh’s application to stay the sentence pending an appeal to the High Court.

During the trial, the prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor Lokman Kasim from the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission, called four witnesses, while the defence, one. — Bernama
