KUCHING: A man was caught by members of the public while another escaped during a snatch theft incident at the Jalan Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre yesterday.

The incident occured around 5.20pm when a male customer was approached by an unidentified man who then tried to grab his mobile phone from the table.

The attempt failed after the customer was able to deflect the man’s attempt, which prompted him to turn to an adjacent table and grab a female customer’s bag.

He then fled down the stairs to the main road, where a male accomplice was waiting on a scooter, as a number of customers chased after him while throwing plastic chairs in his direction.

The suspects were able to speed off but did not get far after they crashed into an oncoming car and fell onto the road.

The pursuing crowd apprehend one of them but could not catch the second suspect who fled the scene on foot.

Police personnel arrived shortly to take custody of the apprehended suspect, and seized the scooter for further investigation.
