KUCHING: The Sarawak Handball Association (Saha) will send teams to compete in this year’s Sukma.

The association is still identifying 14 players each for the men’s and women’s shadow teams.

“The players will commence their training at Sports Planet Kuching from Jan 30 onwards,” Saha secretary Abang Ismail Abang Julhi said.

The training programme will be divided into two sessions – from 9am to 12pm and from 3pm to 5pm – every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The shadow teams will undergo three to four months of training to prepare for the Sukma challenge.

“This is because almost all the players are new faces. Apart from the training, we are also planning to send them to compete in the Perlis Open in May as a final exposure for them,” Ismail added.

The state teams will also play friendly games with Brunei teams in March.

Ismail has set the target of reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals for the women’s and men’s teams respectively.

Meanwhile, Saha will be organising the Sarawak Open Handball Championship at Sports Planet Kuching from March 16-19 for the Datuk Amar Abang Johari Challenge Trophy and the Datuk Abang Abdul Rahman Junaidi Challenge Trophy.
