KUCHING: The Football Association of Sarawak’s (FAS) decision to appoint former Bosnian international Fuad Grbesic as a coach shows Sarawak’s commitment toward developing the juniors in the state.

FAS president Datu Sudarsono Osman believes the coach has the experience and expertise to identify and develop talented junior players in another two or three years.

“Players identified will be groomed to be absorbed into the President’s Cup squad and the Sarawak senior side,” he told Bernama.

Grbesic, 54, had started his career as a junior player for his country and later played for his country’s leading club in European competitions.

The Bosnian’s first task would be to start spotting talent in the Sarawak Junior League which kicks off on Feb 14, as well as work closely with local football academies to identify talented players.

Grbesic who was delighted to be given a two-year contract by the FAS said he would do his best to repay Sarawak’s faith in him.

Meanwhile, Sarawak President’s Cup coach Johnny Dominicus said his squad would be in the Peninsula for 10 days, starting Jan 21, to prepare for the competition.

He said the team would play a number of friendly games against Harimau Muda C, Armed Forces, Selangor PKNS and Penjara FC. — Bernama
