Exploring the extent of Home Affairs’ responsibility

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The new policy on expatriate recruitment and related issues is part of the Bruneianisation reform and in reducing unemployment rates. The move is to encourage employers to hire more locals, and at the same time, bring down the number of foreign workers, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported.

The agenda was discussed during a two-way meeting the Ministry of Home Affairs and members of the Legislative Council. The meeting also deliberated the roles of the Immigration and National Registration Department as well as the implementation of the new Miscellaneous Licence Act 2015.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awg Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awg Othman. Briefing on the new policy of hiring expatriates was delivered by the Acting Commissioner of Labour, Awg Haji Rani bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Mohamad Yusof.

Meanwhile, the Acting Director of the Immigration and National Registration Department told the floor about the relevant issues and the responsibilities of his agency in enforcing the law and regulations.

Awg Azmi bin Haji Hafneh said that among the responsibilities is monitoring foreign nationals who enter and leave the sultanate through the border control posts, as well as observing the activities of the expatriates in the country. The measure is to ensure that the national interests in terms of economy, social, religion and culture is secure.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs talked about the Amended Miscellaneous Licence Act 2015. Awg Haji Muhammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar explained that the Business Licence Act was enforced on the first of this month.

The Order provides additional power to the Licence Authority to suspend business licence and issues a notice to close a business premises for a certain period.

The meeting, among other things, shared many information and updated the officials on the procedures taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs and its departments. Also present at the occasion was the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awg Halbi bin Haji Mohamad Yussof.
