KUCHING: Residents in flood prone areas are advised to cooperate and evacuate when told by authorities.

Semariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali who made this call said they must follow the directive as they are based on facts provided by the Sarawak Rivers Board.

“We take actions based on facts. Please don’t be stubborn about evacuating because it is a preventive measure.

“If their homes are not affected, then they can just go home. Evacuations are done early to prevent any unforeseen circumstances,” she said when chairing the Semariang Flood Operations Committee meeting at her service centre yesterday evening.

She said the areas in her jurisdiction affected by the flood were Kpg Sg Bedil, Kpg Lintang, Astana Lot, Semariang Phase I and II, where the water was above the safety level.

She added that so far no one had been evacuated, but assured she and her committee were on stand-by and were prepared for any eventuality.

“We are on high alert and our hotline 082-443566 is up and running 24 hours starting today (yesterday). We are also requesting for the evacuation centres to be open as soon as possible,” she said.

There are five evacuation centres in Semariang – Semerah Padi Phase I recreation hall (capacity of 200), Semerah Padi Phase II recreation hall (200), Jln Bentara Surau (150), Dewan dan Pustaka and RPR Phase II hall (50).

A second meeting involving the secretary, women’s chief, youth section and community leaders discussed flood preparation.
