BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police seized 90 kg of cannabis worth RM300,000 in an inspection on a car left by the roadside in Kubang Semang, here on Monday.

Following the seizure, a man with a previous criminal record was arrested in a raid on a house in Tanah Liat, here, early yesterday morning, said state police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.

“During inspection on the Proton Waja car at 8.30pm yesterday (Monday), police found 90 pieces of compacted dried leaves suspected to be cannabis,” he said at a news conference at the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police headquarters, here, yesterday.

He said police found the keys to the Proton Waja during the inspection at the 28-year-old man’s house at 1.30am yesterday, and they also seized two mobile phones and a Kawasaki motorcycle.

“Police investigation found that the suspect had been actively distributing cannabis around SPT for the past five months. He is being remanded until Jan 27 to facilitate the investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim said the investigation papers on the abuse case of a seven-year-old girl who was rescued in a state of hunger in Sungai Dua, near here, last Thursday had been handed over to the head of the Prosecution Unit yesterday.

“The child’s father is under remand until tomorrow and the 34-year-old man will be charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for abusing and neglecting the child,” he said.
