MIRI: i-Systems College is keen to introduce floorball to secondary schools throughout the state, revealed its principal Farrell Choo.
Floorball which evolved from ice hockey and indoor hockey originated in Sweden where the game had been played since the mid-70s.
“We received encouraging response from schools although it is a relatively new sports in the State,” Choo said at the college’s floorball team training session at Miri Indoor Stadium recently.
“We plan to extend the workshop to secondary schools throughout the State. Thanks to the Education Department for giving us the green light to conduct the workshop in schools.”
Choo said the floorball workshop conducted by the college last year benefited some 120 secondary students including trainees from the Miri campus of Teachers’ Education Institute.
Schools that participated at the workshop were SMK Baru, SMK Columba, SM Pei Min Miri and SMK Chung Hua.
On how the college first got involved in floorball sport, he said it had organised a floorball workshop conducted by Sabah Floorball Association in August last year.
Students from the college had participated in a two-day workshop.
Subsequently, the college held regular training sessions and games for its students.
Sarawak has yet to have a floorball sport association though there are five floorball associations in the country: Malaysian Floorball Association, Selangor Floorball Association, Penang Floorball Association, Kuala Lumpur Floorball Association and Sabah Floorball Association.
Choo said Miri is setting up the first floorball association in the State so they can organise an inter-school floorball tournament this year.
