THE New Zealand High Commission recently welcomed this year’s three Malaysian recipients of the New Zealand Asean Scholarships.

The scholars will each be departing for New Zealand over the next month, and their visit to the High Commission was an opportunity to learn more about living and studying in New Zealand, as well as for the High Commission to offer its congratulations to them in person.

This year’s Malaysian recipients were Amirah Abdul Razak, who will be studying for a Master of Management at Massey University; Sri Themudu Bully Baboo, who will be studying for a Master of Entrepreneurship at the University of Otago; and How Sin Meun, who will be studying for a Master of Planning (with a focus on environmental planning) at Lincoln University.

The New Zealand-Asean Scholar Awards (NZAS) recognise New Zealand’s close cultural, economic, and geographic ties with Southeast Asia.

They seek to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to the economic, social, and political development of their region.

NZAS are offered for postgraduate level study — postgraduate diploma (one year), masters by research or coursework (one or two years) and doctoral (three and a half to four years).

Scholarships are offered in specific subject areas that are relevant to the development needs and employment opportunities of Malaysia for the Agriculture Development, Disaster Risk Management, Public Sector Management and Private Sector Development.

Applications are due by June 30 each year and it is recommended that applicants apply to a New Zealand institution for an offer of place by April 30.

The awards are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme.

They are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
